You might have already heard from the teachers and some students that the school is planning to have iPads next year. But this doesn’t mean that there won’t be any more books.
One plan the school has is to lease the iPads for 2 years from Apple; and then, charge a Tech fee which will save parents about $250-$300 over the usual book fees. Then, every two years we will be getting new iPads.
One goal is to make the Ipads available from Apple at a very low price for graduating seniors who would like to keep their personal machine.
“This is a great opportunity for students; the iPad is very accessible. It could definitely improve their learning” said one Apple employee (John) interviewed by El Cid.
Currently there are 170 iPads in school that are being used by students everyday, and apparently, there has been a positive feedback from teachers and students.
One of the reasons the school wants to have this new technology next year is because the iPad has much more power than a single book. Also, it will make it easier to expand learning to different areas and topics,
For those who don’t know, the iPad is basically like a large iPod touch, one of the first major tablets. It’s current operating system is Apple’s iOS4 however, on October 12th it will be updated to iOS5. One drawback is that it does not support flash driven websites since, Apple favors HTML5.
The school is currently having trouble saving the documents, but Technology Director Mr. Sean Doyle said that is one of the things that will be fixed in a couple months.
“The iPad has few limits,” said Mr. Doyle.
