Exciting Anticipation Surrounds the Start of the Basketball Season

After our Dons defeated Scripps Ranch for the title as King of the North Champions, with a final score of 56-47.

As the temperature begins to drop, the Dons 2023-24 winter sports season is beginning. Cathedral Catholic has a diverse lineup of winter sports that will bring excitement to the Don’s community. Particularly, the basketball teams bring in lots of energy to the winter season.

The boys and girls basketball programs are expecting a bright season ahead of them. Both teams have been training hard in their offseason to prepare for the competitive season. In the 2022-23 season, the boys varsity team ended the season with a 15-14 record, and the girls team with a 16-16.

The 2023-24 season kicked off with a midnight madness rally. During this rally, cheer and dance performed a routine. After, the crowd got the opportunity to meet the players on the boys and girls varsity basketball teams. This rally was full of spirit and consisted of a dunk contest, a 3-point contest, and a fun game of musical chairs. It was the perfect way to build up excitement for the beginning of the basketball season.

The boys varsity basketball team has had a promising start to their season. They have played 10 games and are currently 8-2. This success started in their offseason training, the boys’ basketball coach, Coach Bousley, explains how “Our team voluntarily put themselves through a rigorous training program in which they worked hard in the weight room and on the court to bond as a team and develop elite work ethic and habits. They quickly all bought into a “fearless to grow” mindset and focused on development and pursuing excellence.” All their hard work is now benefiting our dons on the court.

The girls are ready to get back up on their feet after a close loss in their first game. They played Carlsbad High School and the game ended in a final score of 60-58. Girl’s basketball coach, Coach Turpin, says that for game days “Every kid has their own routine. They must arrive an hour to an hour and a half before the game so they can visit with the trainer as needed, get their gear on, get up extra shots, and cheer on our JV who often play before us. Game days are the most fun.”

With a strong start paving the way, the girls’ and boys’ basketball teams hope for many remarkable achievements on the court this season.
