Understanding the 2024 Election

The “Road to 2024” is beginning to come to the forefront of voters minds. Many suspect that the 2024 Presidential Election will be yet another polarized battle between current President Joe Biden (left) and former President Donald Trump (right).

With the heat of the 2024 election beginning to accelerate, the primary elections are starting to promote the powerful candidates and question the political strength of the rest.

On Monday, January 15th, former President Donald Trump experienced a landslide win in the Iowa primary election. This achievement appears to solidify the validity of Trump’s presidential candidacy in the upcoming election.

As of now, there are two candidates in the Republican Party vying for Presidency. These members include Donald Trump and Niki Haley, Governor of South Carolina.

Donald Trump, the 45th President of the United States, is rerunning for President after losing his attempt at his second term in 2020. Trump is famously known for his movement to “Make America Great Again” where he prioritizes putting the needs of American citizens first.

To bring this movement to life, Trump intends to support American manufacturing with the aspiration of improving America’s economy. He also takes a strong stance against trade with China to combat foreign economic competition, and in turn, allow the manufacturing of American companies to flourish.

Throughout Trump’s past presidential term, he chose to not support the Paris Climate Agreement, an international treaty rooted in preventing climate change. Trump’s lack of concern regarding climate change caused significant scrutiny from Democratic voters. Trump is also known for supporting lower taxes for American citizens, defending the Second Amendment, and taking a strong stance against immigration (BBC).

While Haley shares primarily similar views to Trump as they are both members of the Republican party, Haley is known for her decisive stance against abortion. Haley also advocates for resolving the flaws within America’s immigration system. She claims that any foreign individual who wants to work and benefit America’s economy should feel welcome, however, she opposes an open-border policy (NBC).

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis was previously viewed as Trump’s greatest threat in the election. In the past few months, DeSantis’ polls were stronger than other Republican candidates but fell behind Trump. DeSantis’ presidential campaign came off as confident but was ultimately unsuccessful as he shockingly dropped out of the race before the New Hampshire primary. DeSantis voiced his support for Trump in the 2024 election and shared that he believed Republican voters still “want to give Donald Trump a chance”.

Current President Joe Biden is the returning Democratic Party nominee. During his presidency, he promised voters he would reverse Trump’s immigration policies. Biden also supported raising the federal minimum wage to $15 and offered student loan forgiveness during the coronavirus, which resulted in undoing Trump’s large tax cuts. Biden has also rejoined the Paris Climate Agreement and supports the right to an abortion.

While it is still unclear who the Republican Party candidate will be in the General Election, voters should continue to follow the Primary Elections and begin to form their opinions on who they would like to see as the next president. With election coverage and new information being released each day, staying focused on current events will allow the next population of voters to be prepared for this year’s election.
