Anthony “Big A” Ajlouny, the winner of the recent Western League Championship discus competition, sprained his ankle last Saturday. The accident happened, unfortunately, one week before CIF tournament.
“I can’t really walk on it much, but I do plan to throw this Saturday,” said Anthony, a three-year veteran of the throwing team.
He already holds the 11th grade record for discus at 138.9 feet. He also has the sophomore record for shot-put at 36.85 feet. Anthony is on course to break the current school discus record; he’s already thrown only 8 feet short of current record. His personal record is 146.1 feet and the school record stands at 154.5 feet.
But now, with an ankle sprain, it seems less likely he will be able to break the discus record. Fellow senior Anthony Garcia, who witnessed the sprain, said, “It looked like it hurt bad and did swell up right away, but Anthony is a tough guy; he’ll power through it.”
The sprain occurred during a pickup basketball game at the 4S Ranch Boys and Girls Club. His right ankle rolled while going up for a rebound.
“It hurt really bad,” said Anthony, “but I kept playing on it for a few more minutes, so that I wouldn’t look like a cry baby.”
He hopes that going to the trainers after school will prepare him enough for this Saturday.
“This is my senior year, and you better believe that I’ll compete no matter what is in my way,” he said. “And I do plan on getting first!”
