Track athletes making a mark

Cathedral Catholic High School’s Track teams are having a great deal of success in their 2011 season. Many of the Dons athletes are San Diego Section leaders in their respective events. This means that they have some of the top times out of all high school athletes competing in the same events.

In sprints, CCHS senior Trevor Stevens is 8th in the county for the 100 meter, with a time of 11.06 seconds. Stevens runs the 200 meter sprint with a time of 22.46, landing him at 9th in the county.

Dereka Chargualaf represents the female sprinters in the 100 meter with a 12.87 second time and a ranking of 12th in the county.

Our team is doing really well in sprints because of the leadership on the team provided by Kat Redoglia, Dana Conlin, and myself,” said Dereka. “A couple weeks ago, we went up the Arcadia Invitational and Trevor Stevens had the honor of going. He was one of the first male sprinters to be invited in a couple years.”

The Dons boast two long-distance stars in Tom Valente and Caitlyn Kroll. Both Valente and Kroll rank in the top 10 in the county for the 800, 1600, and 3200 meter events. Kroll is also 5th in the county for the 400 meter with a time of 58.64 seconds.

Cathedral’s best hurdler tops the county rankings as well. Grant Zebold is 8th in the county in the 110 meter High Hurdles with a time of 15.31 seconds. He also takes 11th in the 300 meter Intermediate Hurdles with a time of 40.22 seconds.

The Dons track athletes look to carry their successes into the end of league and, eventually, the CIF meets. “League finals are coming up and we hope to do well,” said Dereka. “After a close loss against Scripps Ranch, we are working especially hard to beat them in the CIF Finals.”
