The Dons kept on rolling last week as they took on the Lincoln Hornets at Manchester Stadium for their homecoming game. Lincoln, the 266th ranked team in California, came into the game with a 4-2 record, and their team was looking to continue its winning streak following a 20-7 victory over Mira Mesa the previous week.

The scoring in the game started in the first quarter at seven minutes to go, with a fourteen-yard touchdown run by Drew Cowell (#5) and a successful point after touchdown (PAT) by Tim Semenza (#17).

The rushing touchdowns in the first quarter continued in the Dons’ favor as Adam Eastwood (#25) ran for a 31-yard touchdown of his own with a successful PAT by Tim Semenza.

After their 14-0 lead in the first quarter, the Dons did not look back as they continued on to win the game against Lincoln with a final score of 48-0.

Head Coach Sean Doyle said that he was quite happy with the Dons’ effort in their homecoming game. “I thought we played well in all aspects of the game. I was very proud of how the back-up players moved the ball on offense and also how defense adjusted to an offense whose formations that we had not practiced or played before.”

This week, the Dons will be facing off against their rival St. Augustine in the annual Holy Bowl game. St. Augustine has struggled so far in the season with a record of 3-4, and the are currently ranked 83rd in California. However, not all of the Saintsmen’s losses have been blowouts as they lost 15-13 to Vista Murrieta and 34-28 to Oceanside. The stakes of this upcoming game are particularly high since St. Augustine is the Cathedral’s biggest rival, and the winner of the game will also be the crowned the Eastern League Champion.

Coach Doyle feels that the team is ready, but nevertheless needs some minor improvements, “We had too many penalties and little mistakes on the offensive side of the ball early in the game. We need to get rid of those mistakes.”

The Dons also have their eyes on St. Augustine’s standout player Frank Buncom IV, who plays the safety position and has scholarship offers from various division one schools. Currently he is deciding between Notre Dame, Stanford, Duke, Vanderbilt, and UCLA. “Frank Buncom is a standout player for Saints, and is a nice young man in general. He is a very skilled player and it is a part of our game plan to stop him,” Coach Doyle said. Buncom seems to be everywhere on the field as he already as accumulated 85 tackles on the season in addition to two interceptions.

The Eastern League Championship is at 7:00 at Mesa College, and it should be a close game. Currently, the Holy Bowl record stands as 16 wins for the Saintsmen and 32 wins for the Dons.
