The Cathedral Catholic varsity girls volleyball team will be competing in the Nike Tournament of Champions in Phoenix, Arizona this upcoming weekend. This tournament features some of the best high school women’s volleyball teams in the nation. Additionally, the following weekend, the team will be traveling to Santa Barbara to partake in a tournament that displays the top sixteen teams in California.
The Cathedral Lady Dons are looking forward to both challenges, and Coach Kelly Drobeck described the tournaments, saying, “These two tournaments the next two weekends will be tough tournaments and good tests for the teams.”
At this point in the season, the Lady Dons are sporting an impressive 14-1 record, beating such teams as Torrey Pines, La Costa Canyon, and, most recently, Westview. The Lady Dons rallied behind junior Olivia Zolezzi and her stellar serving in the third game of the match against Westview and pulled out a victory.
Although not all the games have been as close as the one against Westview, Morgan Cormier and Claire Sommer, the captains of the team, work to ensure that all players stay focused and determined. Coach Drobeck describes these two players as “great leaders” and they will be instrumental to the success of the team moving forward.
Regarding the main goal for the rest of the season, Coach Drobeck said, “I just want the team to get better every single day.”
This story is not over yet, and for our volleyball team, the story will only be complete when they gone on to compete for the Western League CIF and the state titles.
