The Christmas season has officially begun! To exhibit Christmas spirit , CCHS students were challenged to a gingerbread house contest during their gold five classes on December 2, 2010.
Participants were provided with rules to abide by, such as using all edible products, the area not exceeding two by two feet and making all parts of the house on school grounds. Not only was the contest a time for students to get into the Christmas cheer, but also a time to employ creativity.
Religion teacher Ms. Nicole Geis, incorporated a theme of Saint Teresa for her class’ gingerbread house. Meanwhile, Mr. DeAngelo’s senior government class created a white house masterpiece.
Senior Delaney Brannighan said, “It was really a team effort! We all were assigned a part of the house to work on while we had one main person leading everyone.”
Soaring to new heights, Mr. Steved Ferson’s Algebra I class designed a geometrically-shaped pretzel house topped with decorated gingerbread men. This served as a creative alternative to the normal house.
Judges were welcomed into the world of the Wizard of Oz, or at least history and speech teacher Mr. Jeff Owen’s class’ replica. The house was adorned with the yellow brick road and even evil witch’s feet sticking from underneath the house.
“Go Dons!” Mrs. Bricker’s Pre-Calculus class designed Cathedral’s very own football stadium equipped with a scoreboard signifying CCHS winning against Point Loma.
It was snowing in Mrs. Michelle Baker’s classroom when her students adorned gingerbread and ice cream cones to create a white winter wonderland. The house was replete with a Jell-O ice-skating pond and house, and the students worked diligently to develop a new creative concept.
First-Place winners of the contest was Mrs. Melissa Padgett’s senior government class.
Senior Drew Milisom said, “Our theme was the U.S Pentagon and everyone in the class participated in helping to win! I think our uniqueness won the judges over!”
Third place winners, Mr. Rob Reiter’s sophomore US History class, decorated their gingerbread in an original way as well, creating a circus theme.
Just cutting it short at second place, Mr. Minner’s class put great effort into their edible masterpiece, a Saints vs. Cathedral gingerbread town!
All three winning classes will be rewarded with a pizza party.
Whether it’s an old fashion gingerbread house or a decedent, two feet tall white house, the Christmas spirit has begun to spread at the CCHS campus!
