Last Friday, October 15, our Cathedral Catholic Dons football team crushed Scripps Ranch High School’s Falcons 17-0 and showed not only that they are a team to beat, but they are getting better with every passing week.
“We went in with a really positive attitude, and we were really confident in our ability to win,” said junior running back Szongaia Brown. “We practiced like a team, and we brought that to the field.”
The Dons’ offense revealed their true colors as senior running back Jonny Martin ran 5 yards for a touchdown, and senior tight end Blake Wolfe caught a 25 yard pass, also scoring a touchdown. Martin had a total of 101 rushing yards and an average 4 yards per carry, while Wolfe had an average of 43 receiving yards with 2 receptions during the game.
Despite early predictions that the Dons were falling short of the excellence that we have all come to predict in past years, they have proven themselves once again to be more than capable of playing with any other team. However, the close loss at the hands of Lincoln High School last year still looms over the Dons’ heads, and they are looking to redeem themselves this Friday against the Hornets. A victory would close the wound that cost them their perfect season last year.
“We’ve still got some fight left in us, and we’re definitely not going to give up,” said Brown. “We’ve still got something to prove out there.”
