Mrs. Bricker’s Calculus students accept math competition challenges

Mrs. Brickers Calculus students accept math competition challenges

Mrs. Debbie Bricker, AP BC Calculus teacher, has decided to once again challenge her students outside of the typical classroom experience. Entering all of her students in the American Math Competition and other tests such as the California Mathlete Exams, she has discovered a team of bright minds and learners.

The American Math Competition took place on Wednesday, March 28th and involved almost all AP BC Calculus students. After the last test, Mrs. Bricker was proud to announce CCHS as 24th out of 158 teams, coming in the top 15%.

Individually, seniors Patrick Fitzgerald and Dalton Case came in 93rd out of 3856 students, placing them in the top 2.4%. David Lee took the ultimate win as Co-top American Math scorer at CCHS.

In the California Mathlete Test, senior Nevin Snow most recently scored a perfect 6 out of 6.

This year, however, competition is growing. Around 7000 students are competing, nearly doubling the number from last year, and around 40 states are competing.

Mrs. Bricker said, “I encourage all of my students to do well and am happy to see them apply their skills to a test similar to the AP.”

On Wednesday, students attended their Calculus classes and took the test on computers. The results from the last test and answers are up on Mrs. Bricker’s homework page.

Regarding the Calculus BC math class, junior Reeny Thomas said, “It is definitely challenging, but I would recommend it to everyone who is willing to work hard!”

Dalton Case, successful math student and contest participant, said, “I just go in without studying. I figure it’s just a general test of knowledge and what will help me most is sleep.”

He said, “Calculus BC is a great class. I think loving math contributes to that, but Mrs. Bricker is one of the best teachers I have ever had. I think that she makes the class a lot more manageable than it normally would be.”
