Women’s sports has been continuously growing over the past few years. There’s been more fans, more media coverage, and more money that’s been put into women’s sports. Big time athletes like Caitlin Clark, Shakari Richardson, A’ja Wilson, Suni Lee, Harper Murray, and many more are major contributors for the rise in women’s sports.
Record Breaking Crowds
In 2023, the FIFA Women’s World Cup had an impressive viewership and sold out stadiums. In 2024, women’s college sports took over. The basketball final four matchup between the LSU Tigers women’s basketball and Iowa Hawkeyes women’s basketball broke records with the amount of TV viewers they had. Also in 2023, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln women’s volleyball managed to have a world attendance record for a women’s sporting event. More and more people are starting to go in person to watch rather than sitting home on TV.
Rise In Stars
Women athletes are becoming big celebrities. Caitlin Clark broke scoring records and drew millions of viewers to the women’s NCAA tournament. Angel Reece became nationally known during the tournament and grew her social media platform. Simone Biles made a return to competing and that attracted global attention. These athletes started popping up on ads, tv shows, and received a lot of brand deals. Social media played a big role in this. Highlights spread around fast and the fans are able to connect with their favorite athletes.
What does this mean for rising female athletes?
Leagues like the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) and the National Women’s Soccer league are growing. More roster spots are growing, new teas are being added, more college scholarships are available. Senior basketball player Bianca Slone says, “It shows young girls that hard work matters, they get inspired by successful women athletes that gives them confidence to keep playing and chasing their dreams.” This shows young athletes that there are more paths to go pro than before. Athletes like Simone Biles and professional stars across basketball, soccer, and tennis show young women what is possible. Now women’s sports are becoming sustainable careers, not perfect yet, but they are improving fast.

I liked how you highlighted an aspect of sports that is not often covered. I also liked how it was inspiring and informative at the same time
