Cathedral Catholic junior Glenn Ashmore says, “I think this team has what it takes to compete with anybody.” They have offensive forces like Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado, who continue to be leaders on both offense and defense. The Padres pitching has also helped keep the Padres in closing out games.
Another major topic of their season so far has been the new ownership of the team. Kwanza Jones and José E. Feliciano’s leadership changes the direction of the franchise. Many fans and supporters believe the ownership’s commitment to San Diego could help the team stay competitive for years to come.
Injuries have also affected the Padres during the season. Key players have missed time, which is forcing the team to adjust the lineup and rely on the depth players. Even though they are challenged with fighting injuries, the Padres are still in conversation to compete in the World Series.
Padres struggle
Many fans and reporters believe that Fernando Tatis Jr will be the key for their success. Tatis has been in, some would say, a slump this season. Tatis previously had a low mark of .770 OPS in 2023, but even still, he was a great contributor to the team with 25 home runs and a .257 batting average. Cathedral Catholic teacher Mr. Faraimo says, “If he starts playing at an MVP level again, the Padres can absolutely compete for a championship. They just need to stay healthy and consistent.”
This season, Tatis’s batting average is .252, and he has an .626 OPS with 0 home runs this season. Those percentages aren’t horrible, but the Padres will need a lot more out of him if they want to compete for a championship.
Overall, the Padres are rolling this season and are gearing up to have a great postseason run. They have proven to be able to compete with any team in the league. If players can stay healthy, and players like Fernando Tatis Jr. can return at their best, the Padres will be tough to beat when it comes to playoffs.
