At CCHS, school mass is more than just a weekly tradition, it’s a time for the entire school community to come together, pray, and reflect. One of the biggest reasons these Masses feel so meaningful and memorable is because of our choir. Their music doesn’t just fill our gym, it adds to the atmosphere, bringing students, teachers, and staff to experience the mass more deeply.
The more extreme the role, the more sincere the tone for each Mass. From the opening song to the final hymn, the voices guide the mood and help everyone stay engaged. Marguerite McPherson, a sophomore says, “Choir provides a more balanced setting for mass. Without choir, Mass just seems like a long speech. Not that the liturgy of the word is less powerful through speech but people tend to be connected with music. Overall the choir provides a lighter atmosphere to mass for more people to pay attention.”
Without music, Mass would seem quieter and less connected, but the choir adds energy and focus. Songs can make it easier for students and staff to reflect and participate, even if they aren’t necessarily singing the songs out loud. Miriam Jose, a freshman says, “The music aspect of Mass is extremely important because not only can it be engaging and a different form of worship, it can also set a tone for different Mass parts, such as a tone of reverence during Mass parts related to the Consecration of the Eucharist.”
But beyond what the audience sees, there is a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes before and even after Mass. Brooke Mallder, a sophomore at CCHS says, “Choosing songs to fit the mood of the Mass goes along with it, and adjusting any timing issues. In addition, mics have to work and we have to get through practicing all of our songs before Mass, which can be time crunching.” Choir members spend weeks in rehearsals practicing and perfecting their songs, learning harmonies, and making sure everything sounds rightly put together. On the day of Mass, they arrive early to warm up, check their equipment, and get organized. While most people only see the final performance, it takes dedication and teamwork to make it all come together.
Choir helps build a sense of community at CCHS. Their performances often become some of the most memorable parts of Mass, leaving a lasting impression on the people who attend. Overall, the choir is a major contribution to our school Masses at CCHS. With their efforts towards the preparation and their overall teamwork, they help turn each Mass into something meaningful for the entire school.

The choir is always amazing and great to listen to! I liked the way you referenced that without music, mass would be less inclusive and more silent.
