My Girlfriend’s Closet, a club at Cathedral Catholic High School is connected to the nonprofit organization My Girlfriend’s Closet. This club is about helping teen girls in foster care feel confident and cared for.
One of the events My Girlfriend’s Closet holds are the distribution events. The Website My Girlfriends Closet states that during these events,“Volunteers and board members come together to assist teenage girls and young women at our Distribution Events held twice a year in the NTC area of Point Loma. We play music and have the donated clothing set up like a boutique to make the event fun for all the girls involved.”
Setting up for these events, members of the club go through teens’ donated clothing and check if they are clean and in good condition. Then, they get organized by size and style. Poppy Namazy, a freshman and one of the members in the My Girlfriend’s Closet Club says, “We want to create a nice environment for these girls and want them to feel welcome while shopping.” During the events, teen foster girls are invited to come “shop” for the clothes they need. The clothing is free but the girls that work for the organization are able to create an environment just like an actual store.
One special thing about My Girlfriend’s Closet Club is that the girls involved work hard to create a welcoming environment. The members don’t just lay the clothes out on tables, they decorate their space and make it organized and feel comfortable. Freshman Leanne Knapton, another member of this club says, “It’s a very inclusive club and very welcoming to anyone who wants to join, they provide so many opportunities to help out by putting in work but also by making it a fun interactive experience.” Their goal is to make an environment for girls feel confident while they shop. They want everyone to feel valued and cared about.
At CCHS, the club members also help plan all the details of these events. They work on things like setting up the space, how to advertise, and how to improve each event. They are also planning to bring a smaller event to our school. The club hopes to partner with the school’s food pantry so families that come for food can also have access to clothes if they need it.
This club is important because it teaches students responsibility and compassion. By helping with the events, members learn how to organize, communicate, and work as a team. What this club is, really makes big differences in teen girls’ lives. Even students who aren’t part of the club support it by donating clothes. My Girlfriend’s Closet Club shows that coming together to help others can create a stronger and more caring community.
