Cathedral Catholic High School has a collection of outstanding clubs, run by students, that give opportunities to build the community. Run by Hannah Sperling ‘26, Julia Sindici ‘26, and club mediator Ms. Day, the Best Buddies club has tons to offer.
The main goal of the club is to open opportunities for people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDDs) through creating an inclusive environment where students build lifelong friendships.
Within the club there are social events every month like pumpkin decorating, ice skating, walks in Balboa Park, karaoke, beach days, as well as hangouts with students with/without IDDs.
Hannah Sperling shares, “Best Buddies has definitely had a lasting impact on the Cathedral Catholic community…It is changing lives by the power of inclusion. Best Buddies works to build these everlasting friendships outside of the classroom. We aim to not only have fun events, but also give back to our community through service.”
With the club’s message of building friendships, Julia Sindici has three words to describe the club, “Laughter, friendship, and inclusion. At every event, we have so much fun and have built authentic friendships. Everyone is included and invited to attend and feel like there’s a place for them.”
“I hope that Best Buddies becomes a reminder that everyone is welcome, everyone is loved, and everyone is capable.” As club President, Sperling hopes for the club to become a positive reminder for everyone.
Sindici shares, “No matter the gathering, everyone is happy to come together and participate in a fun activity.”
Ms. Day helps guide, but lets the leadership team take the lead on events. As a member, she shares, “Members gain perspective and make a difference by being a friend to our students with neurodiversities.” Day’s favorite memory during her time with Best Buddies is the annual ice skating event. Alumni are also invited, which is a great time to come together, especially during the holiday season.
Come join all the social events that build lasting friendships with students with or without IDDs, Julia Sindici, Hannah Sperling, and Ms. Day always have welcoming hands for students looking to become a part of the Best Buddies club.
