Late nights, pep rallies, and football games. Suddenly, your classmates are now considered “family.” Homecoming is not only a dance, but a tradition that brings life to the community. The people behind these events, who constantly work to enrich your high school experience, may be a mystery to you. They are part of the American Student Body, also known as ASB.
Dr. McIntosh, Director of Student life and Leadership, states, “School spirit is a unifying force that helps people find a sense of belonging.”ASB consistently strives to bring back the attendance rate and school spirit at events by creating activities that appeal to students. While you may be anxious about your workload and extracurriculars, hearing the words “Tomorrow is pajama day!” over the intercom, helps to relieve some stress.
ASB is involved in so much more than just planning dances and hyping up football games, they serve as the voice of the school. ASB advocates on behalf of the student body, ensuring that all their needs are heard. They speak up about important issues and provide a solution to the administration, such as the dress codes.
Spirit Week
Monday – Starting strong with Jersey day, students showed their sports appreciation and supported various teams. At lunch, talents were showcased in a friendly dance battle!
Tuesday – Adam Sandler day! While kids compete in a golf competition, they are doing so wearing comfy clothes that embody Adam Sandler.
Wednesday – Pajama day: Students wore their coziest PJs and came together to watch their friends compete in a donut-eating competition.
Thursday – As we celebrated the school Mass, students brought anything but a backpack. At lunch, a karaoke contest was held.
Friday – The final stretch! Every grade had its own holiday attire and showed off its class spirit at a pep rally. The night ended with the crowning of king and queen at the homecoming football game.
Spirit week is a homecoming tradition that is intended to bring the school’s community closer together and have them engage with their peers. ASB comes up with ways to fill our week with excitement and creative activities. College Raptor states, “From Spirit Week to the big game, the dance, and the after-parties, this annual celebration brings students, families, and alumni together in a display of school spirit and community pride.”
Homecoming

Last Saturday, October 27, the Amalfi Coast-themed homecoming took place in the academic quad, where students enjoyed ping pong, dancing, photo booths, and pizza! 9th-12th graders participated in the fun night. The theme represents the mood of the year, summer ending, and school life springing. Students celebrated in fun colorful outfits while being transported to a night in Italy!
Lukas Pascual-Gonzalez, a member of ASB for 3 years, shares that hard work is put into creating a night that students won’t forget. “We start everything months before, but it all piles down to the last two weeks, when we start promoting and organizing everything.” Although there is a lot of planning and outside work necessary, he shares, “We balance it really well by knowing our parts and what we’re supposed to contribute, because in ASB there are multiple groups.”
In ASB different groups such as sound and spirit, outreach, design, etc., work together to create an unforgettable event. Lukas explains that school spirit is important because, “Being able to have these events is a way to maintain a sense of unum, which is our school theme.” Keeping unum, meaning “one” in Latin, in mind when thinking of school, allows ASB to coordinate events that bring students closer together.
ASB constantly works at trying to make high school an unforgettable experience for students, whether that’s at big events or small friendly contests at lunch. Not only are they the masterminds behind the scenes, but they represent the student body. So next time, show your appreciation for ASB and attend the next school dance!
