In the bustling hallways of Cathedral Catholic, there exists a silent guardian, a beacon of compassion, and a healer of scraped knees and wounded hearts. This unsung hero is none other than the school nurse, whose role extends far beyond the realms of band-aids and thermometer readings. As we delve into the daily life and roles of Mrs. Spooner, our school nurse, we discover a narrative of care, resilience, and the profound impact one individual can have on an entire educational community.

Mrs. Spooner has been a part of our community for a few years now and has made a great impact. She saw the job opening at a great time and was interested in a new type of nursing outside the hospital setting. She enjoys the excitement of our lively campus, and meeting new students every day. Her three kids grew up in Catholic Education, so CCHS was a perfect transition for her.

A day in the life of Mrs. Spooner differs from day to day. Her days are filled with unknowns which makes the job even more fun. She says, “Students, unfortunately, always manage to become ill, and injured and need different accommodations for their classroom curriculum because of these things.” She loves getting visits from students during breaks and lunch. Senior Tiana Ownes says, “I love to stop by the nurse’s office throughout the week because Mrs. Spooner and Mrs. Williams will always talk to me and brighten my day.” Students also come in throughout the day if they have scheduled medications and treatments. Her day goes by very fast and never knows what to expect.

Mrs. Spooner enjoys many different parts of her job, but her favorite part is “getting to know the students on a personal level.” Mrs Spooner also explains how she likes to be a “resource and a place of comfort” for the students. She truly makes students feel at home and makes them feel comfortable enough for students to go to her office any time throughout the day and know they will be helped. Tiana Owen says how Mrs. Spooner “has a calming presence and makes everyone who goes to her office feel loved and comfortable.”

Overall,  a great nurse like Mrs.Spooner ensures that our Dons are always taken care of and feel at home at school.
