Varsity Girls Water Polo

Overall Record: 11-18
League Record: 1-5
Looking Back: Cathedral Catholic High School lost a tough game against Carlsbad High School in the CIF quarterfinals.  The game, which took place at La Jolla High School on Saturday afternoon, resulted in a 6-11 loss for CCHS. Seeded sixth in Open Division, the team knew what it was up against after losing 6-17 to CHS earlier in the season. With CHS scoring seven goals in the first quarter of Saturday’s game, CCHS could not seem to catch up by the time the clock ran out in the fourth quarter.
Coach’s Comment: “We had a rough first quarter,” Head Coach Jaclyn Puccino said. “Carlsbad shot lights out and our defense struggled to adjust. We kept it close the rest of the game, but it was difficult to overcome the six goal deficit early on. Overall, the team’s performance exceeded expectations this year. The mix of young talent and veteran leadership combined for a powerful group of girls that gave it their until the last whistle blew. [The girls] were inspiring and I’m excited to see what the future holds.”
Around the Corner:  Due to CCHS losing in their CIF quarterfinal game, its 2015-2016 season has come to an unexpected end.

Varsity Girls Soccer

Overall Record: 20-3-3
League Record: 8-0-0
Looking Back: Last week Cathedral Catholic High School maintained an undefeated league record against opponents La Jolla High School and Patrick Henry High School. The team crushed both LJHS and PHHS at Manchester Stadium with a win of 4-0.
Golden Moment: The team celebrated senior night before it matched up against PHHS.

Around the Corner: Next week CCHS finishes up its season on Tuesday against EHS in the Manchester Stadium at 5 p.m.

Girls Basketball

Overall Record: 7-18
League Record: 5-7
Looking Back: The Cathedral Catholic High School team faced Lincoln High School on Friday night at home for its Senior Night. The girls took a tough loss and ended the night with a close score of 64-55.
Notable Don: Team captain Alaina Alvarez ’16, who scored a couple of three pointers to help the team stay in the game, played on a recently recovered anterior cruciate ligament tear.
Player’s Comment: “The Senior Night game was one I will never forget. Throughout the season I got the opportunity to get to know the seniors really well and they are like sisters to me. I will miss them a lot,” Kaylee Stiffler ’19 said.
Coach’s Comment: “I am very proud of the effort the team gave tonight,” Head Coach Jackie Turpin said. “We’ve been talking about everyone giving thirty-two minutes of effort, and together we gave everything we possibly could.”

Around the Corner: The team will play its first CIF Division 1 playoff game against Mater Dei High School at Mater Dei at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

Boys Basketball

Overall Record: 18-5
League Record: 11-1
Looking Back: The boys crushed Lincoln High School last Friday 86-45. It was Senior Night, and the coaches mainly played the seniors, giving them their final “hazzah” in league. Leading by almost double the points, the team tried a lot of tricks as it took down LHS  throughout the game. Star player Brandon McCoy ‘17 sat out the first half of the contest as a result of team disciplinary action.

Student Comment: “It was really cool to see the senior have their final league moment on the court,” Kate Garofalo ‘17 said. “It’s going to be really exciting to see how far this team takes it in CIF this year.”
Around the Corner: League has finished and the team will move on to its first game in CIF. Its first game will be home against Poway High School on Feb. 27 at 7 p.m.

Inline Hockey

Overall Record: 12-5-0
League Record: 12-5-0
Looking back: After losing to the Rancho Bernardo High School 4-6 last Wednesday, the Cathedral Catholic High School inline hockey team bounced back from its loss and slaughtered Escondido Charter School in a 14-5 victory on Tuesday. CCHS returned back to Kit Carson Park on Thursday to play a match against Saint Augustine High School, canonizing the Saintsmen in a 16-0 blowout. Thursday’s match against the SAHS was the last of the CCHS season before the playoffs.
Notable Don: Drew Jones ‘17 supplied the team with a number of goals during its match against SAHS, and the whole team virtually played to its best ability between the White Tigers and the Saintsmen.
Player comment: “We played to blowout games last week which really boosted our overall record,” Adam Stocker ’16 said. “I was personally upset after we lost to Rancho Bernardo last week, but I think we definitely ended our season well. Saint Augustine doesn’t have a very strong team, and our match against them sharply contrasted to our match against Rancho.”
Golden moment: CCHS played two blowout games after losing to RBHS last week and playing a string of shaky matches within the past few weeks. With the help of valued players Jones and John Leone ‘16, CCHS was able to cut through ECS’ defense on Tuesday. The entire inline hockey team tirelessly beat out the Saintsmen on Thursday.
Around the Corner: After winning league, CCHS will have its first playoff game at Kit Carson Park on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Girls Track and Field

Looking back: The track and field season has not officially started.  However, this past week, an informational meeting for the sport was held.  Also, many of the varsity members practiced either on their own or together for morning runs as they personally started to prepare for their upcoming season.
About: The season officially started this Saturday for both varsity members and returning athletes.  There are several elements in track and field, and teammates are broken up into their corresponding groups.  Members that do distance in track and field typically meet off campus to do long runs.  Sprinters, hurdlers, long jumpers, pole vaulters as well as other field elements like shot put stay on campus to practice. New teammates will start preparing on Monday.
Player’s Comment: “I hope to break my personal record,” Erin MacNeil ’16 said, “and to help my distance team make it to CIF.”
Around the corner: The season will start on Saturday for returners and varsity members.  All newcomers will start practice this Monday.  Students may still turn in their slips to join the sport. Beginners are still welcomed to join the team.  The team’s first meet will take place on March 3 against Mira Mesa.

Boys Soccer

Overall Record: 11-6-2
League Record: 10-1-2
Looking Back: Cathedral Catholic High School played against both La Jolla High School and Saint Augustine High School with a win of 4-0.  In the LJHS senior night game, all the seniors got their fair share of playing time and support from the team.
Golden Moment: Milo Barton ’16 sprints from the middle of the field, down the left side through five LJHS defenders, and shoots a narrow cross cage shot for a goal.
Notable Don: The class of 2016 seniors Eduardo Aiza Contro, Demetrius Attia, Milo Barton, Ryan Chessum, Bruno Esquivel, Ethan Polaski, Keon Vidarsson, and Cole Stafford for being the leaders on the team and holding the team together through their final home game.  
Around the Corner: With the league season over, the team will move onto its CIF game on Wednesday at 5 p.m. The team will play Scripps Ranch High School at Manchester stadium.

Overall Record: 6-5
League Record: 2-3
Looking Back: The team had its first weekend of CIF and will continue further.
Notable Don: Garret Seaver ‘16 placed second overall in CIF so far.
Coach’s Quote: “All they have to do is get seeded in the masters tournament because CIF is not the goal,” Head Coach Jason Gigliotti said. “State is the goal for wrestling.”
Around the Corner: The team will continue its journey through CIF this Friday and Saturday.  After CIF the team will be expected to compete at state.
