Some shows never really end. Nearly two decades after Prison Break first captivated audiences with its blend of suspense, family, and impressive escapes, the series is making a comeback with a modern reboot. Following the series’ original trilogy, the new show is set in the same world but with new characters and a storyline.
Emily Browning as Cassidy, Drake Rodger as Tommy, Lukas Gage as Jackson, Clayton Cardenas as Michael, JR Bourne as Junior, Georgie Flores as Andrea, and Myles Bullock as Darius are just a few of the new characters being introduced.
Will the reboot be as captivating as the original, or will viewers disagree?
As stated before, “the new show is set in the same world as the original series but will feature different characters and a new storyline”, says Variety.com as they discuss the series’ goal in creating the new season.
As a similar taste in the original storyline, TV guide states that, “an ex-soldier turned corrections officer (Browning) takes a job. She works at the deadliest prison in America to prove just how far she’ll go for someone she loves.” Twisting the brothers’ love for each other from the original, the viewers can see a shift in the characters, as a woman plays one of the main roles.
The viewers can only imagine how intense this new reboot may be. Being a top hit show in the 2000s, Hulu has ordered the reboot of the series, meaning the fan base will get one last season of the new look Prison Break.
TVGuide expresses that, “Hulu initially began developing a new Prison Break series in 2023 before the original show’s viral explosion, and that success helped spark an order for a new pilot episode in December 2024.”
Variety.com states that, “No official dates have been mentioned, and the audience doesn’t know if the rest of the season has been officially written, but viewers can create an estimate that at some point in 2026 the show will break through.”
Breaking hearts from his sacrifices for love and handsome looks, Wentworth Miller, will not be appearing in the reboot. A crucial character from the original series revealed years ago that he was done playing straight characters, which doesn’t align with Michael Schofield’s character. The three main original characters played by Dominic Purcell, Wentworth Miller, and Sarah Wayne are not to be seen in the new series. Disappointing viewers, as the whole show seemed to rely on them. For now, viewers can only expect the new series to be its own thing while still connecting to the drama from the original.
Although those actors are not in the new series, the showrunner, Elgin James, and co-creator of Mayans MC are taking part in this project once again. With some of the original writers and producers from the original production, viewers can see that the new version of the show will have a somewhat different vibe than the original, but still in line with the drama and love previously.
While the reboot can capture the same intense and heartbreaking energy from the original, it’s hard to tell if the new film will even compare to the original, with a loss of impactful actors and a raw storyline. But one thing is for sure, fans are ready to see the same determination and loyalty from their heart-pounding characters. Fans can only wait for this new series to air and set the plan. Once again, Prison Break is ready to make its move.
“Different prison. New love trope. Bigger escape.”

I think the director of the reboot showed how making great risks for others can go beyond family, as the new season has a women that joins the correction facility to help someone she loves. Additionally, they did a good job of keeping similar themes as the first one, but portraying it in a very different way. They kept the same DNA of the show with the continued suspense and intellectual characters, but also weaved in new ideas. Overall, a great read!
