On February 23, 2026, Vogue Magazine and the Metropolitan Museum of Art announced the theme for the annual ‘Met Gala’to be hosted by Beyonce, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams, and Anna Wintour. The dress code for this year’s event, taking place on Monday, May 4, is titled ‘Fashion is Art’. This vague and expansive dress code will, according to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, “[invite] guests to express their own relationship to fashion as an embodied art form and celebrate the countless depictions of the dressed body throughout art history.”
Each year the Met Museum, also known as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, invites around 450 high-profile celebrities and stars to attend the ‘Met Gala’. They pay thousands of dollars for entry and arrive in priceless, intricate outfits. Celebrities and their designers are given full creative control over the outfit, with the only parameters being that it is an interpretation of the dress code — though many designers opt for an abstract and vague interpretation of the theme and dress code.
Every year, the event consistently receives criticism for being an insensitive show of wealth by these high-profile individuals. However, the Met Gala is not simply a fancy dinner and opportunity to show off one’s sense of fashion: it is a fundraiser for the seasonal costume exhibit at the Met Museum, having raised around $31 million last year according to Vogue Magazine. Additionally, the annual event marks the opening of the seasonal exhibit. This year’s gala is special as it is “set to inaugurate the Met’s new, nearly 12,000-square-foot Conde M. Nast Galleries.”
The dress code for the highly anticipated gala is not simply pulled out of thin air, but rather is based on the theme for the upcoming costume exhibit. The Vogue planning team works directly with the individuals in charge of the costume exhibit to ensure the dress code properly represents the theme. This year’s costume exhibit at the Met will be themed and titled ‘Costume Art’.
As stated by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, “The show will examine the centrality of the dressed body, juxtaposing garments and works of art from across the Museum’s vast collection to create pairings that not only illuminate the indivisible connection between clothing and the body, but also the complex interplay between artistic representations of the body and fashion as an embodied artform.” This exhibit will be both extremely educational as it teaches people about the connection between us and our clothing, as well as extremely accessible as it requires no prior knowledge of designers, only of the human experience.
The exhibit is said to be organized by “thematic body types”, including the ‘Naked Body’, the ‘Classical Body’, the ‘Pregnant Body’, the ‘Aging Body’, and the ‘Mortal Body.’ Such artistic expressions of every variation of a human body, especially those often underrepresented in mainstream media, are especially necessary in the age of social media, when everything we consume is manufactured.
In terms of the event itself, though the list of attendees has not yet been officially released, some celebrities I expect will have show-stopping outfits this year include Beyoncé, Sabrina Carpenter, and Zendaya, who is known for her Met Gala looks. From her iconic debut at the 2015 Met Gala, themed ‘China: Through The Looking Glass’ to her light-up Cinderella gown in 2019, led by the theme ‘Camp: Notes on Fashion’ she has always stood out among the carpet.
Lucy Hetherington, a CCHS senior, shares, “I’m excited to see Anne Hathaway.” As for her take on the theme, Hetherington states, “I feel like they should wear costumes, I think it’d be fun. Like a non-actor wearing a costume, like Lewis Hamilton.”
I hope designers and celebrities will take this vague dress code and theme as an opportunity to truly embrace and highlight every art form, from visual art to filmmaking and performing arts to music. Hetherington shares that her interpretation would be to adapt a film costume, while I myself would opt for a take on visual arts, treating my model as a paint canvas. I believe themes such as ‘Fashion is Art’ provide such a wide range for interpretation, it is exciting to see how various designers will perform.
