With the mix of a break from school and spending quality time with family, the holidays cheer people up. This boost in happiness is what makes this time so special (the presents are fun too!).
Even the thought of Christmas can enhance an already cheerful mood. When people think of past Christmas memories, reminiscing on happy childhood memories is a great mood booster.
Many people admit to being more happy during the holiday season, a student here at Cathedral, Finley McHugh, said she experiences this boost. Being with your family takes a large role in impacting this holiday joy. Finley McHugh shared that, “spending quality time with family and friends makes me happier because my family brings joy to my life.” It is proven that when people are around their loved ones they experience more warmth and love in their lives. According to the National Library of Medicine, “ people report greater exponential well-being with their friends and family.” Being with family can help people feel more comfortable and can allow you to relax knowing you’re with people that care about you.
Andrew’s University says, “Being able to experience the nostalgic moments that are associated with the Christmas season can make anyone’s heart smile.” Looking back on past magical childhood memories can bring that magic to the present moment, allowing stress to be relieved and relaxation to set in. Personally, just hearing the jingle of Christmas music can bring me back to all of those cherished childhood memories: opening presents next to the fire and hearing ‘Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer’ play in the background. Christmas can also provide a well deserved break from stressful things that may be happening in people’s lives. Stressful grades, college applications, and friendship drama all take a backseat when it’s the season of Christmas.
During the Christmas season we are called to give back to our communities, which puts a smile on everyone’s face. According to the Mental Health Foundation, “Helping others can also benefit our mental health and well-being, it can reduce stress as well as improve mood.” The Christmas season can help us to remember to be grateful, share what we have, and spread more Christmas cheer. Angel trees and donating presents to kids are both great ways to give back. You can also donate money and presents to children that will be in the hospital during the holidays. Rady’s Children Hospital always has a box to drop off toys for the kids and are always accepting donations.
Spend this Christmas season with the people you love and share the gift of Christmas to others, just wait for your mood to skyrocket! Happy Holidays!
