The routines students follow in their everyday lives can surprisingly determine how successful they are in school. The choices we make from the moment we wake up to when we go to bed can determine how focused and prepared we are for school and even just the day in general.
Some habits are better to have than others. When it comes to school, it is best to wake up earlier rather than later. According to Healthline, “Waking up early has several benefits, including giving you more time in the morning, reducing your risk of chronic conditions, and enhancing concentration.” If you were to wake up late it would most likely make you more stressed and tired because of having to rush out of the house. Having a good morning routine doesn’t have to be complicated. It just allows you to prepare for the day.
Sleep schedules and health also have an impact on mood and focus. A lot of students stay up late on their phones or doing homework, but lack of sleep can make it hard to focus in class. According to Mayo Clinic, getting close to or even more than eight hours of sleep is best for the ages 13-18. Having good eating habits and exercising habits can also improve your mood and concentration.
Having good study habits is another big part of student success. While some students study a little each day, there are others that wait until the night before a test. Getting used to cramming for tests or quizzes is not a good thing. This often leads to more stress and less sleep. A survey out of 115 students shows that more than 60 percent usually study right before a test or when work is assigned. The best thing to do is find study methods that work well for you. Things like flashcards, summarizing lessons, or even group studying.
Phones and technology in general can be helpful and distracting. Phones and computers can provide assistance to studying, but they can also be used to cheat or lead to procrastination.
Overall, taking the time to build good habits and being consistent with them makes school life less stressful as well as more successful.
