The problem of sexual abuse and the Diocese of San Diego’s commitment to providing a safe environment for students recently prompted Cathedral Catholic High School to discuss the topic of safe environment to bring the school in compliance with the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People.

“I have seen a lot of sexual abuse allegations and stories appear in the news and online recently,” Katherine Stevenson ‘19 said. “I appreciate that administration focuses on educating students about avoiding sexual abuse because no one should be forced to go through that.”

Between Jan. 30 and Feb. 6, Catholic faith teachers discussed the topic of safe environment with their students, presenting topics such as the qualities of Christian love in forming healthy relationships, the qualities which form abusive relationships, recognizing signs of sexual abuse, and the skills to protect students against sexual abuse.

“I think parents really need to talk to their students about the problem of sexual abuse,” Stevenson said. “I know there’s a lot of students who would be afraid to talk to their parents and teachers about sexual abuse, and I don’t think that’s right.”

CCHS parents recently received an email describing the presentation their students will receive, stating students will be told to continue a discussion with the topic of safe environment at home with their parents. Parents also were allowed to preview the presentation online through the Diocesan website.
