Are you interested in becoming an Ambassador? Mrs. Ashley Franklin, Ambassador moderator, said, “An Ambassador is a student specifically chosen to represent the Cathedral Catholic community, especially the core student values of faith, knowledge, responsibility and character.”

The Ambassadors for Christ Corps. was founded in 1990 at our very own University of San Diego High School, “Uni,” by Estelle Kassebaum. Many other Catholic high schools have since replicated our program: including Mater Dei Catholic High School in Chula Vista, as well as Chaminade College Preparatory in West Hills.

According to Mrs. Franklin, the Ambassador application has moved online this year. It became available on Monday, February 9^th, and can be found on Mrs. Franklin’s homework page on the bulletin board. Applications are due Friday, February 20^th. Those who submit an application will receive an email regarding the next step in the application process: interviews. Remember to bring a printed copy of your transcript to the interview.

Not sure what you’re getting yourself into? Mrs. Franklin highlighted the Ambassadors’ primary responsibilities and said that “Ambassadors are responsible for representing our school and helping out with various events that happen on campus.” These events include Open House, Dons’ Days, summer orientations (both freshman and transfer student), and many more. Ambassadors also accompany visiting students in our “Don for a Day” program, as well as give tours of our campus to prospective families.

Mrs. Franklin recognizes the significance of having student Ambassadors; she said, “It is amazing to have a group of students committed to helping their school and being the face of Cathedral for our community. It is a great honor and responsibility.” Not only do the Ambassadors represent and promote Cathedral, they also gain impressive, personal traits from the experience.

Executive Ambassador and senior, Nicole Lobo, claims that, in being an Ambassador, she has gained sufficient communication skills, “you learn a lot about how to interact with other people and act in a professional and respectful manner,” she said. She feels that her experience has prepared her for her next stage of life in college and in the working world, as she has learned about professionalism through real-life experience. Fellow Executive Ambassador and senior, Elizabeth Sullivan, said, “I have learned how to communicate much better, which I feel our generation lacks greatly. Being an Ambassador has given me the skills to excel in my college interviews – four down, one to go.”

Executive Ambassadors also reflected back to the day they decided to apply for Ambassadors, and gave their reasoning. Junior Executive Ambassador, Katherine Firsching, recalled, “When I was at freshman orientation, a nice Ambassador helped me find my locker. He made me feel very comfortable during a nerve-wracking time of transition, and I wanted to reciprocate the feeling to others someday,” she said. Nicole Lobo said, “I wanted to be an Ambassador because I love interacting with other people, and I wanted to help showcase the school in the most accurate light possible.”

“Being an Ambassador gives you the opportunity to grow as a student and as a leader. The responsibilities and commitments that you make as an Ambassador provide you with so many life skills that will serve you throughout your life,” said Mrs. Franklin.

Do you want to be an Ambassador? Elizabeth Sullivan said, “Go for it! The experience is completely worth it.” Katherine Firsching’s advice is to “be outgoing, be friendly, and show your spirit for your school!” Nicole Lobo advised, “If you really enjoy interacting with other people and have a lot of love for Cathedral, definitely consider applying to be an Ambassador. It just might be for you!”
