With Law and Order dominating the cable television feed for an impressive thirteen seasons, it’s no surprise that many high schoolers are intrigued with professions in law. Though this will be only its second year in existence, the Cathedral Catholic mock trial team exists to feed that intrigue, as well as provide an exciting and challenging extra curricular to all students interested.
Sophomore Breanne Borromeo, a returning member to the squad, said, “[The mock trial team] taught me a lot about being a lawyer – the rules, the court system – and helped me improve public speaking skills.”
“The students can expect a lot of fun this year. We expect that we are going to win; we have the talent to,” said Ms. Anne Egan, a first-year assistant coach for the team.
Weekly Tuesday practices in the Assisi Lecture Hall culminate in February with a trial competition at the San Diego Courthouse. Last year, the team did not place, but a senior team member won the award for “Best Witness Performance.”‘ This year, however, the team has their eye on the prize: a championship title.
“Our main focus and goal is to get to the state and national championships. We’re using what we learned from last year as a guide to take with us as we make our way toward the championships,” said Breanne.
Though, according to Breanne, they have a “powerhouse team” this year, new members are still welcome. Students who are interested may show up to a Tuesday practice in order to get more information.
“Students who like to read and ask a lot of questions are usually good additions to the team,” said Ms. Egan.
