Remembering Bishop Emeritus Robert Brom

Bishop Emeritus Robert Brom passed away in his home at the age of 83. We honor his gracious acts towards our community and strive to live a life of holiness just like him.

The San Diego Catholic community mourns the death of the beloved Bishop Emeritus Robert Brom. He passed away on Monday, May 9, 2022 at the age of 83 from unknown causes.

Bishop Brom was born on September 18, 1938 in Arcadia, Wisconsin. There, he grew up in a loving family where he then later discovers the call being offered to him to become a part of the religious life.

On December 18, 1963, Bishop Brom was ordained as a priest in the Winona, Minnesota diocese. After a successful 20 years in the priesthood, Brom was appointed as the Bishop of Duluth in 1983 by Pope John Paul ll.

Bishop Brom was appointed Bishop of San Diego on July 10, 1990.

People of the church admired his kind heartedness and passion to spread the true word of Christ. After another 23 years of serving as Bishop of San Diego, he retired on September 18, 2013, the same day as his 75th birthday.

Bishop Brom helped to establish many Catholic schools across San Diego, including Mater Dei in Chula Vista and the establishment of Cathedral Catholic High School, after the University of San Diego High School campus closed in 2005.

The Bishop gained the respect of many other religious leaders and followers of the Church. As we progress on with our lives, never forget the charitable leadership shown by Bishop Brom both in and out of serving the position of Bishop of San Diego.

To pay any desired respects, the funeral held for Bishop Brom will be on May 17, 2022 at 11:00 am at Saint Therese of Carmel Church in Del Mar Heights. The burial of his body will be at the Holy Cross Cemetery.
