Loss of Motivation
School is days away from coming to an end. Students are becoming more and more eager to go on a long break from school and mental stress. But to be honest we still have to complete our final units we have in school, and then our finals in each of our classes. But the majority of the students had lost their mental stride to motivation. The big question is how? And why?
There are a large variety of reasons why students can become unmotivated and lose that strength of focus. These reasons can be found in the students personality, their home life, their social environment, and the flow of demanding assignments.
Some common reasons why students may become unmotivated is due to being burnt out. This can happen when a student is feeling exhausted and overwhelmed ove the flow of assignments and exams, extracurricular activities, and social life. Being burnt out can lead to a lot of things including feeling exhausted, loss of enthusiasm, and the loss of interest in school. End result students that feel to be burnt out may constantly be running on empty and struggling to find just a simplest ounce of motivation to finish school strong.
Another reason why students may become unmotivated is the lack of what the students wants to accomplish, in other words their goals. Without clear goals, students may not see, what level of effort and work they actually need to put in, in order to accomplish, and complete assignments. This can be especially true for students who are unsure of the future career path they would want to take, or for those who aren’t passionate about the classes they are taking. Students who lack clear and effective goals may feel like they are just going through the motions and finding no sense of purpose or direction in their academic pursuit.
Distractions can also play a significant role in how a student is motivated. The end of the school year can be a time of a massive flow of distractions in social life, such as prom, graduation parties, and summer vacation plans. These distractions can lead students to prioritize social activities over classwork. As well as, the rising level of distractions coming from technology and social media, video games, and or streaming services. “When I come home from school, I feel exhausted, and yet the first thing I do when i come home is sitting on social media instead of focusing on my work”, states Sofia Bonomi 25’. Students who are easily distracted may struggle to stay focused on their classwork, leading to the lack of motivation.
Poor time management is another reason that contributes to the lack of motivation for students. As the school year come to an end, students may become less disciplined with their time, and waste it doing unnecessary things. This can lead to procrastination and last-minute cramming, which can add on to the feeling of stress and being burnt out. STudents who struggle with time management may constantly feel overwhelmed by the demands of their assignments, leading to a sense of hopelessness and increasing lack of motivation.
Finally, a lack of engagement is also another contributor to lack of motivation for students. Students who do not feel engaged in their classwork may become uninterested and unmotivated. This can be due to a factor, such as lack of passion in the subject or even the teaching style that does not resonate with the student. “ I think teachers should engage more with their students, and see them more as acquaintances rather than being superior to students, it would allow them to connect more and understand each other”, states Ava Westerheide 25’. Ava is right in that matter, and it would definitely be a better change to be more inclusive with the students and be more open minded in keeping them motivated and engaged. But students who are not engaged in their class may feel a lack of enthusiasm, indifference and lack of concern for certain classes. Leading to ultimately becoming unmotivated towards school.
Coming to a summary, there are a mass number of reasons why students might feel unmotivated. It could be due to a lack of interest in certain subject matter, feeling stressed and exhausted from the work load, or struggling with mental health issues. Whatever the reason is, it is important for students to recognize their struggles and seek help when they need it. With the right support and resources, students can overcome the lack of motivation and achieve anything they put their mind to.
