The cast for CCHS’s wacky fall show, Little Shop of Horrors, was finally posted following a week of auditions. The play – a dark comedy about a man-eating plant named Audrey II that is trying to take over the world – is scheduled to premiere November 9 and continue through November 10 and 11. Ms. Katie Wilson, drama teacher and director of the show, says, “We’ve gotten a lot of attention for the program and are pushingourselves to do more and more.”
And CCHS has really stepped out of the box for this show. The cast not only promises to be bizarre, but the play itself paints a much darker picture than past shows. This drastic change is a result of the students’ entreaty for something different than the usual productions of the last two years. Ms. Wilson will continue to acquiesce into the spring, where she promises the show, “will be different than what we have ever done before,” she says.
In addition to a darker portrayal of society, those performing also promise to be unique. All taking place in a generic neighborhood in the United States called Skid Row, some of the characters include a deranged dentist, a granny down the street, and, of course, what play wouldn’t be complete without ravenous foliage. The cast has eight weeks, a fairly short time, of rehearsal in which to master their roles under the guidance of Ms. Wilson who says, “I have never directed Little Shop; I’m a better teacher when I am pushing myself.”
One of the cast members is Senior Gavin Barba, the voices of Audrey II and Orin the dentist. Gavin says, “What I want is to put together a lot of fun and interesting shows.” Gavin predicts an audience of 250-300 people, but that, in regards to the fall production, “depends on the show,” he says.
Breaking down the auditioning process, he explains that a student has to sign up for a slot, and then perform a monologue and song. The cast list can now be viewed on Ms. Wilson’s homework page.
So, Cathedral, get ready for some laughs and maybe even a touch of fear, Little Shop of Horrors is like nothing we’ve seen before.
