When it comes to rivalries at Cathedral, the team that usually comes to mind is that purple one from North Park. But another less-heated rivalry is with the Torrey Pines Falcons.
The Dons took the 2011 matchup 13-7, narrowly escaping by two field goals, and then again in 2012 with a 24-17 victory by one touchdown.
According to Dons inside linebacker Xavier Utulu, the rivalries don’t affect the Dons’ play. “We’re not gonna take any game lightly. We approach each game week by week, and we approach each one the same way: not taking any team for granted. No matter who they have or where they’re from, we’re gonna play our football,” Xavier said.
Xavier went on to say that the game with Torrey Pines is always a battle; it is just going to come down to who makes fewer mistakes and who wants it more.
Xavier had a career night in last week’s 38-6 Dons victory over Jordan High School of Utah, getting 8 tackles, 1 forced fumble, and 3 TFL’s (tackles for loss).
The Dons have gained a lot of momentum coming off last week’s big win over Jordan. Highly touted Jordan quarterback Austin Kafentzis didn’t even see the light of day, with Cathedral forcing turnovers and punts the whole night.
The Dons had a big night on both sides of the ball.
On the offense, quarterback Clayton Dale Threw for 8-17 and 110 yards for 2 touchdowns, with Chris Moliga running for 132 yards on 23 carries for 2 touchdowns. Josh Gizzi ran for 112 yards on 20 carries for a touchdown.
On defense, four of the fearsome front seven were each credited with at least 1 sack, with Ray Smith leading with 2 sacks on the night. Sam Tapia picked off Kafentzis twice for big defensive plays in the secondary.
With stats like these, Cathedral is gaining the reputation as a CIF contender in the county. Come out this Friday at 7 p.m. at Torrey Pines High School to see the Dons take on the Torrey Pines Falcons and follow @ElCidSports for live updates during the game.
