This fall, the Dons kick off against an unlikely opponent: Jordan of Utah. Jordan has a nationally recognized football program and is currently ranked 32nd. Their quarterback, junior Austin Kafentzis has already committed to the University of Wisconsin, which is currently ranked 23rd in the nation in college football. In his last game, Kafentzis threw for 309 yards and two touchdowns, as well as rushing for 114 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Defensive end Kyle Davis has a plan to stop this offensive juggernaut. “He’s a really good passer, so first of all, count on pressure from me, Brett (Sarem), and Ray (Smith).” Kyle compared the play style of the opposing quarterback to that of Johnny Manziel, Heisman Trophy winner and starting quarterback at Texas A and M. He noted several similarities in their play styles, pointing out that, while he is mostly a passer, he can be mobile on the ground.
Kyle went on to say that they have been working hard this offseason to prepare for such daunting opponents. “We will come out and star playing hard, making sure we’re hitting well and tackling well.” Clearly this year’s defense is dedicated to a new level of performance.
