In recent years, the Cathedral Catholic Dons softball team has fallen just short of bringing home the CIF championship. This 2011 season, the athletes look forward to achieving this long-standing goal, along with taking hold of the league title.
The greatest success that starting shortstop, senior Dominique Madruga has experienced as a softball player at CCHS was during her freshman year when the team won league title. Ever since, the team has had some difficulty.
The 2011 team, one backed by its group of highly talented seniors, many of whom have been on the team together ever since freshman year, appears to be different from that of years past. The girls are off to a 5-2 record and are looking strong as they head into league games. The toughest opponent they will play this year, according to Dominique, is league rivals the University City Centurions.
According to Dominique, fans should expect nothing short of success for the rest of the year. She said, “The fans should expect a group of girls that really have become a family that gives it their all.”
Although this year’s team is smaller than those in years past, Dominique doesn’t foresee this as being a problem. “I definitely think the group of girls we have this year has meshed together. Being smaller makes this year’s team closer,” she said.
“I think that this group of girls works collaboratively together… we all work together to get the job done,” Dominique said.
