Some recent Cathedral graduates have taken the next step on their athletic journey. Jacob Schrimpf, Tyler Gaffney, and Kelly Reeves are following up great careers at CCHS with successful collegiate seasons.
Tyler Gaffney: From Don to the Cardinal
Tyler Gaffney graduated from Cathedral Catholic High School in June of 2009 as one of the top football prospects in the nation. He was recruited by most of the top Division I Football programs in the NCAA. Gaffney started on varsity at Cathedral as a sophomore and would go on to have one of the best high school careers in state history. After winning a Division II State Championship, Gaffney was also awarded the KUSI Silver Pigskin All-League Offensive Player of the Year, San Diego Union Tribune’s Offensive Player of the Year, and Nation Football Foundation Scholar Athlete of the Year. Tyler also lettered in basketball and baseball. He was also a highly sought after baseball prospect, a part of his scholarship to Stanford would be for baseball. The baseball team won CIF three years straight while he was on varsity.
Now Tyler is a sophomore running back and outfielder for Stanford University. He appeared in 12 football games where he gained 218 yards rushing. Gaffney was fifth on the team in scoring, accounting for 30 points. He was a part of the offense that carried Stanford to a 10-1 record. In baseball, Tyler had a .328 batting average with 3 home runs and 24 runs batted in. His defense was perfect with a 1.000 fielding percentage. Stanford baseball went 31-25 with the help of Tyler Gaffney.
Jacob Schrimpf: From Don to Wave
Jacob Schrimpf graduated from Cathedral Catholic High School in June of 2010 as a well decorated water polo player. He lettered as a varsity athlete all four years of his high school career. Schrimpf has All-American and All-CIF honors as one of the best attackers in the county. As a senior he captained his team to a CIF Championship.
Now Jacob is a freshman water polo player at Pepperdine University in Malibu, California. He was part of the 9-15 Pepperdine Waves, where he scored 14 goals, had 14 assists and 13 steals. Schrimpf’s best game was on September 12th against Occidental College where he scored a career-high 5 goals.
Kelly Reeves: From Don to Bruin
Kelly Reeves graduated from Cathedral Catholic High School in June of 2010 as a highly sought after volleyball player. She started on varsity for all four years of her high school career and won League and CIF Championships in ’06 ’07 ‘08 ’09, as well as State Championships in ‘08 ’09. She set the record in San Diego County for most career kills (1,548) and most career digs (1,658). Reeves was named an All-American as a senior and MVP of the Division III State Tournament.
Now Kelly is a freshman volleyball player at UCLA. She helped the Bruins to a 21-8 record. She is 3rd on the team in digs with 209 and 5th on the team in kills with 148. Reeves put up 24 blocks this season on one of the best college volleyball programs in the nation.

I agree with Taylor, Tyler Gaffney had an amazing career at Cathedral and sure hasn’t slowed down, not only in football, but baseball as well.

Tyler Gaffney had a good season. It was cool to watch someone from our school play for Stanford!
