The Cathedral Catholic Dons Football team’s comeback season continued with the 51-14 rout of the Point Loma Pointers Thursday night in the CIF Division III Semifinals at Manchester Stadium. The victory gives Cathedral a chance to win their fourth straight CIF Championship when they go up against the Lincoln Hornets in Qualcomm Stadium this Monday at 1pm.
The Dons rode a big-play offense and an opportunistic defense to a 51-0 lead at halftime. The scoring opened with a 61 yard pass from Garrett Bogart to Szongaia Brown within minutes of the start of the game. After a 27 yard field goal by Jacob Roman, Patrick Downing intercepted a pass, racing 20 yards for the score. Before the first quarter ended, Bogart connected on a 44 yard touchdown pass to senior receiver Chance Early. Downing would go on to run back another interception, giving the Dons a 31-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Cathedral’s dominance continued into the second period. Once again, Bogart connected with Chance Early for a 45 yard touchdown pass. Jonny Martin closed out the Dons’ scoring with touchdown runs of 60 and 10 yards as Cathedral amassed an incredible 51-0 lead. The Pointers would work to save face in the second half, scoring two touchdowns to result in a 51-14 final.
This impressive win is a testament to the hard-work and perseverance the Dons have shown all season. After losing four of their first five games, Cathedral has gone on the win six of their last seven, improving their record to 7-5. The Championship game at Qualcomm will be a rematch between the Dons and the Hornets. Earlier this season, Cathedral beat Lincoln 31-15.
“We worked hard all week,” said defensive standout Patrick Downing. “[Coach]Montali prepared us well, and we played our best game of the year.”
