The Cathedral Catholic girls’ volleyball team took another step toward their third straight Division III State Title Saturday night with a three game sweep over North Hollywood Campbell Hall in the Claver Center.
Coach Kelly Drobeck’s Lady Dons improved on their record, earning an impressive 30-8. Their next match is Tuesday at Cathedral in the Southern California Regional Championship against Canyon Crest High School.
Senior Taylor Milton led the way with thirteen kills and a set-winning service ace. Morgan Cormier, junior, followed with nine kills and Kristen Witous, sophomore, earned eight kills against the Vikings from North Hollywood. The win was truly a team effort as Jaclyn Williamson had 31 assists. Also, defense proved key, as Aubrey Valencia had 17 digs and Tatiana Durr had three blocks.
The Dons started out a bit slow, allowing Campbell Hall to take the lead early in the first set. Cathedral, however, went on a run late, forcing the Vikings to take a timeout to lessen the Dons’ momentum with a score of 23-18. The timeout proved pointless as Cathedral would finish the set at 25-18.
The Lady Dons maintained control in the second set, winning with another decisive 25-18. Cathedral dominated the early third set with a 5-0 start, and stayed ahead for the rest of the match. Campbell Hall earned less than six points for the majority of the set, but rallied toward the end, finishing the match with eleven points in the last set.
The Lady Dons asserted their dominance, sweeping the North Hollywood Campbell Hall Vikings 3 sets to zero. Not allowing the Vikings to break the 20 point mark, Cathedral won each set by at least seven points. They look forward to their Regional Championship against the cross-street rivals, Canyon Crest Academy on Tuesday.
