The Cathedral Catholic offense exploded for its highest-scoring game of the season as the Dons routed El Centro’s Southwest High School 69-10 in the quarterfinal round of the CIF Football playoffs at Manchester Stadium. The victory set up a Thursday, December 2nd semifinal contest against Point Loma on the Dons’ home turf.
Behind the passing of sophomore quarterback Andrew Bogart, the receiving of senior wideout Chance Early, and the rushing of senior Jonny Martin, the Dons enjoyed their best offensive night of the season.
Bogart was 5 of 7 passing for 111 yards. He threw touchdown passes of 29 and 36 yards to Early, and one of 13 yards to Blake Wolfe.
Martin turned in another stellar performance, gaining 136 yards on 16 carries, scoring 3 touchdowns for the Dons. Amassing 320 yards on the ground and 111 through the air, the dominant Dons hit up Southwest’s defense for 431 yards of total offense.
Szongaia Brown had a great game for the Dons, rushing for 73 yards on only 5 carries. Brown would add 2 touchdowns to his season totals.
The Dons’ defense also played well, holding Southwest to a total of 167 yards of offense and shutting them out for the final three quarters of the game.
The special teams turned in a good performance as Chance Early returned a punt 46 yards for a TD with 3:39 left in the 3rd quarter.
The Dons start ed slowly, trailing 10-7 after the first quarter, but erupted for 35 unanswered points in the second period to take a commanding 42-10 lead at halftime. The momentum continued to build as Cathedral scored another 20 points in the 3rd quarter to go ahead 62-10. At the end of play, the scoreboard read 69-10, improving Cathedral Catholic to a 6-5 record.
