On Wednesday, October 1, the government shut down for the first time since 2019. “The shutdown happened because Republicans and Democrats could not agree to pass a bill funding government services into October and beyond,” BBC wrote. Since the first time they denied this bill on October 1st they have denied it another 9 times.
Mr.Hogan a teacher at cathedral Catholic high school who shared that he has a wife that works for the government. When I asked him what jobs would be affected by the government shutdown he said this “TSA Agents will have to work without pay. Law enforcement officers such as FBI agents are either at home or working without a paycheck right now. Many of the services and efficiencies that we look to the government to provide are all on hold right now, and the longer the shutdown lasts, the more everyone will feel the impact.” When talking about how the government shutdown would affect schools he said “Initially, the effect of the shutdown will be minimal on public schools. As the shutdown drags on, however, there are some very concerning potential consequences. Across the country, most public schools primarily operate using state funding. Special education services, Title I schools for low income students, and head start programs, however, are funded by the federal government. The longer the shutdown lasts, the more these programs will be impacted.”
He also stated that the government shutdown makes our military less ready for conflict. “Honestly, all the jobs that we take for granted. For instance, my wife works for the Defense department and is responsible for getting medical supplies to Navy facilities all over the country and the pacific region. While there are active duty military members to function in this role in her absence, they do not have the profound operational knowledge that she has. That in turn makes our military less prepared in the event of conflict.”
The Senate failed to advance a House-passed GOP bill to fund the government for the ninth time on Wednesday October 17, the 15th day of the government shutdown. The government shutdown has been going for over 16 days now and has many people wondering when it will be over.
