Trump Sued by the State of New York
Letitia James, New York Attorney General, sued former President Donald Trump, the Trump Organization, three of his children, and others for fraud, involving false financial statements related to the company.
This civil lawsuit filed in Manhattan Supreme Court seeks $250 millions in damages, while also barring Trump, Donald Trump Jr, Eric Trump, and Ivanka Trump from engaging in any commercial real estate opportunities in New York for five years and preventing them from serving as an officer or directors in any corporation in New York.
“Mr. Trump’s Statements of Financial Condition for the period 2011 through 2021 were fraudulent and misleading in both their composition and presentation,” said James.
James said that these claims are referring to evidence obtained during a three-year investigation to federal prosecutors in Manhattan, along with the Internal Revenue Service. James believed this evidence shows violations of federal criminal laws.
At a press conference James said, “Trump falsely inflated his net worth by billions of dollars.”
The reasoning for him doing so, she said, was to obtain more favorable loans and insurance terms for the Trump Organization, along with lowering taxes.
“The number of grossly inflated asset values is staggering, affecting most if not all of the real estate holdings in any given year.” Said James. “All told, Mr. Trump, the Trump Organization, and the other Defendants, as part of a repeated pattern and common scheme, derived more than 200 false and misleading valuations of assets included in the 11 Statements covering 2011 through 2021.”
Since his Florida home was searched last month by FBI agents, Trump has been under intense scrutiny. During this search, the FBI found classified documents taken from the White House. The Justice Department also continues to investigate his actions leading to the Jan. 6 assault on the Capitol.
Allen Weisselberg, a longtime Chief Financial Officer for the Trump Organization, pleaded guilty to similar charges in August, and agreed to testify for the prosecution. This will be part of a deal with Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.
Motives for this lawsuit have come into question, with Trump claiming this civil case and investigation are politically motivated. In May, Trump attempted to sue James for “harassing and overreaching” and tainting his political career. A judge dismissed the case.
Although this lawsuit may not be politically motivated, and just a result of his criminal activities, this will impact the outcome of his potential run for President for the 2024 term. Very few details have been released about this lawsuit. American’s across the nation anticipate the results.
