The next class of NFL Hall Of Fame was announced, and two of the nominees have played for the San Diego Chargers and have a rich history with the city. Quarterbacks Drew Brees and Philip Rivers both are first time nominees and could be inducted into the Hall of Fame during the 2026 Super Bowl.
There is a thorough process for selecting players to get inducted into the Hall of Fame. 50 players are nominated in the middle of October. It is then narrowed down to 25 in the middle of December. Finally 15 will make it in during the Super Bowl.
According to Sports Illustrated, Philip Rivers holds the record in franchise completions (4,908), passing and rushing yards (59,271), and touchdowns (397). Along with this he has 128 wins and 8 pro bowls. Teacher of pop culture sports and avid San Diego sports fan Mr. Reiter recalls his memories of watching his games, “Philip Rivers is obviously a legend in the San Diego community. He also led us to four AFC West championships as well. He had 224 consecutive starts, which was the second longest streak in NFL history, behind Brett Favre.” Not only has this player had an impact in the stadium, but also off the stadium and in the community. “He founded the Rivers of Hope Foundation, which supports foster children and their families. So they’re both two amazing men” Reiter added.
Even though Drew Brees did not spend a lot of time in San Diego, he still has great accomplishments throughout his career. ESPN stated that he played for the chargers from 2001 to 2005. He has the second most career passing yards (80,358) and second most completions (7,142) in the league, only behind Tom Brady. He went to 13 pro bowls, won Offensive Player of the Year twice in 2008 and 2011. Along with this, he won the 2009 Super Bowl and received MVP.
Mr. Reiter added “I think they both have heart, grit, and they’re both fierce competitors”.Both players have had great careers and have contributed a lot to the team. Even after they retired they have been a key part of the history of the Chargers on and off the field, making them worthy of the Hall of Fame.
