Performing love songs written by a range of artists from Rascal Flatts to Marvin Gaye, Cathedral Catholic High School students showcased their passion for the arts at the Love Cabaret Feb. 8 in the USDHS Library.

By staging cabarets, Ms. Katie Wilson, who serves as CCHS drama director, aims to create a professional and intimate opportunity for advanced theatrical students to perform.

“The students have the audience in their laps,” Ms. Wilson said. “I am so proud that they place their passion on display so courageously.”

Given the strong talent in the CCHS drama community, the cabarets allow students who may not get a lead in school productions a moment in the limelight.

Daniel Allagas ’18 peaked in his interest in music during the sixth grade, sharing how a performance provides him with a refreshing release.

“It gives me a creative outlook and lets me, well, let it out,” Allagas said.

Recitals run in a two-way street; the exuberance and passion one sets forth ripples into the viewers’ demeanors, Allagas said. As he sings, Allagas looks into the filled seats, analyzing the audience’s reaction to his performance.

“Seeing the audience smile means I have influenced someone, in a good way, and that makes me happy,” Allagas said.

CCHS students use opportunities, such as cabarets, to envision their aspirations of a life inclusive of performance.

“We try to replicate what you would find in New York City and San Francisco, taking professional caliber theatre and jazz,” Ms. Wilson said.

“These Cabarets prepare me for a career in performance,” Nick Garcia ’18 said. “They motivate me to constantly improve myself.”

The continued practice to pursue the arts illustrates the budding ardor of creative spirits within the students. Attendance from family members and friends creates a warm and supportive ambiance, Ms. Wilson said.

A moved, inspired Ms. Wilson views the contagious passion instilled within the students in their dedication and pursuit.

“[The Cabarets] reignite my passion for the arts, knowing I helped in some fashion,” Ms. Wilson said.

For students and fellow members of the CCHS community interested in attending, the themed cabarets are held once a month in the USDHS Library for $5 or free admittance with a student activity card.

“I love the cabarets,” said performer Cassie O’Hara ’16. “They transport your Monday to a relaxing and enjoyable evening.”

Any fellow Don is eligible to perform in a future cabaret with the guidance and approval of Ms. Wilson.
