How do I impress my homecoming date?

Dear Reader,

By the looks of it, it seems as if you snagged yourself a date – one that you care a lot about. Whether your date is your special someone or simply a good friend, here are some tips that will sure to impress!

There’s a whole new world three inches up.

We often forget that the world inside our case-covered iPhones does not function like the one three inches up. The real world, the three inches up, is unrecoverable, fast moving, and impressionable. Once a moment happens, there is no scrolling back up, rewinding, or playing again. Your post with your date can wait! Focusing your attention on the real person, dressed to the tens, will mean much more to them than the tag in your Facebook album. Giving your true attention and time is the most generous gift in our multi-tasking society. People will never forget the way you make them feel, so make your date feel special. Look three inches up, and give them a smile.

Be prepared for pictures.

Beware: the simultaneous snaps have arrived. The best way to impress your date in this “camera chaos” is to smile. This point is mostly geared towards boys, however the value of a smile is infinite. With a smile, you let your date know you’re happy to be with them. Also, I have found that a smile shows confidence. Boys who are not afraid of exposing their pearly whites across their face often do better with the ladies. Say cheese!

Moves like… You.

Despite what Maroon 5 preaches, you do not need “Moves Like Jagger,” you just need Moves Like You. To really impress your date, don’t hesitate to get out on the dance floor! Every year, I have the most fun dancing alongside all of my friends, despite our lack of rhythm. I have a theory: those who hate to dance have never set foot on the dance floor. Dancing is the main event at homecoming, so give it a shot! No one is looking for Mick Jagger, Cathedral students are just looking for another person to dance and sing with.

Your date is going to homecoming with you. Remember that you are wanted just the way you are! Brush up on some new moves, but have confidence and remember: your date wants the real you. If dancing proves to be a little tiring and you start to get sweaty, be flexible with your date! Go outside to peruse the snack table, or “people watch.”

Mingling with their Mates.

It is great when a person can interact with all different types of people. Being lively and social shows a sincere effort and thoughtfulness on your part, to make your date’s night more fun. Girls, there is more to boys than sports and video games – get to know them! Your date’s friends might be great people that you would have never thought of conversing with. Boys, you are impressing one girl, so I am sure you can impress a couple more. Being kind is the only way to be.

Lastly, the little things.

Whether they’re holding the door open, or laughing hysterically as you attempt to not stab them with a boutonnière, it is the little things that end up orchestrating the grandest gesture. Ask your date to slow dance, compliment their new hairstyle, or unapologetically belt out every word to “Party in the USA.”

You have already accomplished the hardest part. Congratulations! You have a date, now all you have to do is celebrate.

Always and Absolutely,
