Back on the Court: Preseason Basketball Brings Fierce Competition and Big Expectations
With the preseason underway, the boys’ varsity basketball team is building team chemistry, strategizing plays through hard work, and performing at their best during the offseason. Head Coach Graham Bousley, Sei’Mir Roberson ‘26, and Tyler Vosburgh ‘26 give some insight into what the preseason entails to dominate the court during the winter.
Vosburgh says the team, as a whole, has set goals for the season: to beat Saints twice, be CIF Open Division champions, win the State Championship, and win the league championship. “We work to achieve these goals by practicing hard every day, playing with intention every game…uplifting and motivating each other when we need it.”
Improving from last season, the team plans on tackling their big goals. Seniors Roberson and Vosburgh share how the new squad of players has come together to develop new offensive plays, as well as defensive schematics, to win the open division championship. During the offseason, the team gears up for the competitive games ahead through conditioning, weightlifting, and numerous practices during the week to ensure their readiness for the season.
Vosburgh plans to take on the court and do what he needs to do, as a leader, to help the team win. “And that may change from game to game, but the importance is that I go out there and be a true leader to help the team win.”
Roberson transferred to Cathedral Catholic from Catholic Central High School this year as a senior, traveling all the way from Albany, New York. From having family live out here and having Boone Thompson ‘28 reach out to him, Roberson made the decision to be a part of the program. “The transition has been very good considering everybody’s very welcoming here.”
With a high-level program, elite coaching staff, and well-rounded team, Roberson is excited to compete in the winter after having a 3-1 tournament result from the Border League tournament in Las Vegas, Nevada on October 3-5.
Preseason motivates the players for the upcoming season; competing against skilled teams all over the country during the summer and fall with great outcomes.
Graham Bousley, being the head boys varsity basketball coach for three years, has positive feelings for the season ahead. “…one of the most connected groups we’ve ever had. We have great character, great kids, the team is motivated to achieve something greater than themselves…we have a lot of upside.”
Bousley is looking forward to continuing to help monitor and stimulate the growth of the team going forward into the season.
Between traveling to compete in high-level tournaments and devoting numerous hours in the gym, the boys’ basketball team is sure to bring back only great results for the Cathedral program this year.
