Cathedral Catholic Boys and Girls Swim and Dive are currently undefeated this season. The team has had big wins recently against La Jolla and University City High School at the end of March.
The team practices two times a week. These practices include workouts in the weight room and swim workouts afterward.
Many of the athletes on the team also participate in other school sports. “Since I also go to track practice every day after school, I can’t make it to the school swim practices so I usually go to my club swim practices after track,” Patsy Hellmann 26’ says. Patsy has been a dedicated swimmer for 10 years and is one of the top athletes on the swim and track team.
Some standout swimmers on the girl’s team include Patsy Hellmann, Norah Kotnick ’25, and Janie Markowicz ’26. These girls helped to lead the team to a victory over University City with a score of 113-56.
On the boy’s side, senior Cormac Ryan ’25 and juniors Max Arnold and Colin McPhail are some of the top swimmers on the team. “Swimming is a great way for me and a lot of my water polo teammates to get faster at swimming and it’s also fun to hang out with my friends at practice,” says Colin McPhail ’26.
The team swims at meets almost every week and many of the swimmers can participate in up to four events. “I usually do the 50 and 100 freestyle and a couple of relays because I like sprints and it’s fun to race against my teammates and push each other,” Max Arnold 26’ says.
Looking ahead, the team hopes to secure more victories and stay undefeated. Both teams head into CIF and State in May and the boys hope to win CIF again. On the girl’s side, they hope to also win CIF and go to state after securing the runner-up title last year at CIF.
