With the 2024-2025 school year starting again, Cathedral Catholic High School students have seen the dress code becoming more strictly enforced. Although our dress code has been relatively the same for years, students are getting more dress code violations this year as teachers must check at the start of every class.
Students may notice that morning announcements have included a reminder for students to remain standing as teachers check for the dress code. Cathedral Catholic teacher Mr. Hogan informed me that all teachers have been told to “help enforce the dress code by calling out the students that are not wearing what they are supposed to be wearing on a daily basis.” With this new rule in place, it makes it much more difficult for students to be out of the dress code as they know they won’t be able to get away with it.
Last year, most students could get away with being out of uniform because “teachers would never really check”— as sophomore Kristine Bickler told me. She mentioned the difficulty of navigating the dress code this year because she got so used to “getting away with being out of uniform.” However, at the beginning of orientation, Principal Dr. Calkins informed students that a major part of being a Cathedral Catholic student is following the dress code because it is part of our rules and traditions as a school. He emphasized that how we do the small things like dress code matters and affects how we do the big things.
Hogan also noted that he observed a decline in the amount of dress code violations given out so far this year. He explains that this “unified message really helped to drive home to students that they need to dress the way they are supposed to dress.” This year, Cathedral Catholic has highlighted the value of unum or unity, and a huge part of that theme is engaging with and respecting the rules of our school. By doing this, we can make sure that we are all in dress code to further improve our unity.

It is interesting how last year you could get away with being out of dress code so easily, yet this year it is basically impossible. With the enforcing of the rules being more strict everyone will basically be forced to follow the dress code and there is no more getting away with being out of dress code.

I like this article because it gives examples on how the dress code is being enforced this year and then it further explains and gives commentary on it. This article also interested me because it gave me a sense of how students have gotten away with breaking dress code in previous years.

Something I liked about this article is how informative it was. It is important to know as a freshman the rules and dress code at Cathedral Catholic. The reason why the school asks us to wear these clothes is because if we can’t simply wear what is asked, how are we supposed to even attempt at accomplishing something else. This includes our goals and ambitions but it starts with a simple thing like a dress code.

Because the dress code is being more strictly enforced students have no other choice than to be in dress code. This causes students to be one with each other in dress. It is interesting to read about students last year who were purposely out of dress code because no one caught them.

I would agree with enforcing the dress code more this year. In the last paragraph it mentions our theme of this year which is unum or unity, if we are all united on the small things around our campus which includes dress code, then we can be united when it comes to larger and more meaningful things.

I really liked this topic being brought up because as a freshman I really do not have anything to compare this year’s dress code to since I wasn’t here the prior years. Interesting to see the changes you shared in this article.

I really liked the message of Unity as a school. I know how hard it can be to be in the dress code and show who you are, but I believe unity and diversity go hand in hand.

I would agree that people were getting away with dress code for a while and I would know this because I would get away with it. But now that the rules are being enforced more it’s not possible to get away with it anymore, but that doesn’t matter. I now understand that being a Don means more than just being at the school and being involved in sports and clubs and more. It means to follow the little things because if you can’t do those simple little things, then how do you do anything else.

Somthing that i really like about this speech was how relatable it was. All of the thoughts and quotes are all somthing that is important to the dons community. I like how this topic is also controversial and everyone wont have the same opinion
