The Cathedral Catholic High School girls varsity soccer team defeated Eastlake High School 1-0 yesterday to advance to the San Diego Section California Interscholastic Federation Open Division Championship.

CCHS (21-2-3) (8-0) notched one goal by Caylee Hornaday ‘21 to defeat EHS (19-6) (11-1).

The Lady Dons played the gritty CCHS brand of defense en route to victory.

“As a team we knew if we played Dons soccer we could pull out a win and advance on to the championship Friday,” CCHS goalkeeper Justy Carruthers ‘21 said. “We all really wanted to win and we were going to sacrifice whatever it took to win.”

The Lady Dons boast the county’s top seed and rank top 30 nationally, according to MaxPreps.

CCHS takes on the defending San Diego champions the Carlsbad High School Lancers in the finals.

The Lady Dons are proud to represent the first CCHS varsity girls soccer team to play in the open division girls championship.

“We are so excited to play carlsbad again and to make Dons history,” Carruthers said.
