It seemed like all of America was rooting for the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night. They may have been the underdogs for Super Bowl LIX, but they took home the Lombardi trophy after a historic blowout.
The Kansas City Chiefs were going for a three-peat after defending their Super Bowl champion title for the last two years. One of those games was against the Eagles in SB LVII, where the Chiefs won in the remaining eight seconds from a field goal.
“To be successful in the NFL, you need two things, a great quarterback and a great coach, and they have both of those,” varsity football coach Mr. Montali said, after being asked how the Chiefs have constant SB appearances.
Andy Reid, a previous Eagles head coach and the current KC coach, is exceptional at what he does. He’s an “offensive mastermind,” according to Mr. Montali. Patrick Mahomes‘ undeniable talent is one of the major reasons the Chiefs have made five SB appearances in the last six years.
However, Mr. Montali mentioned that the Chiefs receive the “benefit of the doubt” during crucial calls, and Mahomes is the result of favoritism among the NFL.
The Eagles NFC title this year was attributed to Saquon Barkley, with varsity football coach Mr. Faraimo mentioning his running game in getting to this year’s championship. “They built an offense that doesn’t need to overly rely on taking risks,” said math teacher and football fan Mr. Wenclewicz, along with a strong defense when needed.
The Birds had unfinished business this Super Bowl and were not leaving without a title. “We have another opportunity in front of our faces to rewrite a story we have,” said Jordan Davis, a defensive tackle, in a press conference on opening night. The support for the Eagles came from most NFL fans for a multitude of reasons.
“I just think they’re a better team. They’re hot,” said Mr. Montali. Mr. Wenclewicz was rooting for the “underdogs” of the game, mentioning how the Chiefs were once the underdogs just a couple of years ago when people wanted to see them win. When asked, Mr. Faraimo replied, “I hate the Chiefs.”
The Eagles knew they had to do something different this year to get the trophy. Everyone responded similarly, they needed strong defense to run the ball. The Eagles did what they needed to do, keeping the Chiefs from getting on the board until the third quarter.
Six sacks by the Eagles is a Super Bowl record for most in a game, giving Mahomes a hard time throughout the game. At one point, Mahomes was sacked by one of his teammates. Jalen Hurts didn’t waste any time, finishing 17-for-22 passing for 221 yards with two touchdowns left with one rushing score.
One of the many Eagles highlights for the game was a pick-six from cornerback rookie Cooper DeJean. Not only was he celebrating his birthday on Super Bowl Sunday, but the interception was his first career touchdown.
Mahomes had been intercepted twice, sacked six times, and ultimately embarrassed by the Eagles. His attempted comeback in the second half didn’t make a dent in the Eagle’s kingdom of points. The final score was 22-40, and Chiefs fans were having a run for their money.
There were many predictions for Super Bowl LIX, lots of which were incorrect. Some people were sure that Patrick Mahomes was going to be MVP, but after the restless offense and defense from the Eagles, Jalen Hurts left with the most valuable title.
