Girls Varsity B Golf team prepares physically, and mentally, for their season

The Lady Dons Varsity B Golf team is gearing up for another exciting season. After what she says has been a grueling summer spent honing their golfing skills, Senior Eliza Lozano, a two-year member of the Varsity Golf team, is confident her team is prepared.

“For two months straight over the summer, I was going to the range six days a week, [and] practicing or playing at the course at least once or twice a week,” Eliza said.

During the season, the Varsity Golf team practices three to four days a week and four hours a day. Games are scheduled for once a week.

Amidst the hard work and practices, Eliza expressed the importance of some entertainment. “We all just try to have fun on the course while we’re practicing and [we] goof around… but there is a point where we sit and focus on what we’re trying to do, and what we need to practice.”

It seems that this determination and attention to detail is what led the team to finish “8th in the county last season,” Head Coach Mr. Grazier said. “…the Lady Dons are looking to improve upon their finish, and hopefully be in the top five, if not the top two [this season].”

Golf is an unpredictable game. To be successful, golfers need to hone their skills for reacting to any given scenario, as opposed to planning for it. In addition to regular practices, the team participates in mental conditioning to keep them fresh and focused out on the green.

“If you hit a bad shot, you can go downhill from there pretty fast,” Eliza said. She described mental conditioning as, “…training your mind for success and for [the cases in which] you hit a bad shot.” Such a mental preparedness has made a positive impact on the golfers’ nerves as they stand at the tee box.

Looking forward to the oncoming season, Eliza reiterated that the keys to success are concentration and confidence. “Be confident that you have what it takes,” Eliza said.

Eliza hopes her teammates know that they can achieve anything they work for, whether that is getting into a Division I golf program in college, or simply making the leap from JV to Varsity here at Cathedral.
