Lady Dons Volleyball off to a fantastic start

Perfect pass, incredible set, KILL! With a win over University City, Santa Fe Christian, and La Jolla, the varsity Cathedral Catholic volleyball team is off to a great start in the 2014 season.

Leading this team is Coach Kelly Drobeck, assisted by coaches Audra Dent and Paul Ariza. Head Coach Kelly Drobeck has been the head varsity volleyball coach for 16 years leading her team to 13 Western League Titles, 14 CIF Titles, 4 Southern California Regional Titles, and 4 State championships.

Coach Drobeck started to play volleyball when she was only 7 years old in her neighbor’s backyard beach court, so she has a lot of experience in what it takes to be a good volleyball player.

“I look for people who are hard-workers, have positive attitudes, that are coachable, and have some raw athletic ability to them,” she said.

This year, Coach Drobeck plans to have her team try as hard as they can every game and every match, hoping that the season goes in Cathedral’s favor. With only four seniors, the varsity team is very young, but has some amazing talent and a tight bond, on and off the court, and it is showing this season.

The two major strengths of the team is how close the team’s is and how they play offensively. This is shown by Lauren Woodard, who currently has a hitting percentage of .247 with 154 kills, making her ranked first in the league. The strong offensive play is what drives the team, and their defense is already getting stronger.

Madison Linxwiler, one of the team’s captains, is a major leader of the team and makes sure the team stays as close and motivated as possible. “The team is pretty motivated as a whole. Everyone wants to play and the only way to do that is work as hard as you can at every practice, and when the opportunity to step on the court comes, work even harder,” Madison said.

Preparing for the upcoming season, the girls gave all their effort everyday, striving to be they best they could be. The girls pushed themselves to play and workout daily, so they were prepared for the season to come. The team wanted to insure that the many new players are accustomed and ready to play, with the different systems Cathedral uses.

They sure did get accustomed, because the team is so far 3-0 in the league, and is hoping to keep that undefeated title as the season moves forward. The girls have a home game today against Patrick Henry. They have a good game plan and are really excited, so you can support them today at the Claver Center.
