Last year the Cathedral Catholic High School varsity girls basketball team finished (21-12) (11-1), and the Lady Dons look to have another successful year with many returning players.

CCHS opened up this season with tournament play, giving the Lady Dons good competition before they enter into league play.

“We are playing a very competitive and challenging schedule,” CCHS head coach Jackie Turpin said. “We are hungry to prove how good we are compared to the other teams in San Diego and the Southern California Section.”

Tempo and hard-nosed defense are the team’s main priorities this season.

“I think we need to play a little tougher on defense, we need to make our opponents earn each basket,” Turpin said. “We need to know when to slow down on offense and move the ball better within our offense.”

Both the coaching staff and players hope the new emphasis on defense will give the team a new competitive edge as they play against top teams.

“We have great young talent that compliments the veterans we have,” Turpin said. “Everyone is excited to work and grow, it’s going to be a great season.”
