Star Wars hype influences upcoming Winter Formal
February 4, 2016
Cathedral Catholic High School’s winter formal is just around the corner, taking place Saturday, Feb. 6 in the Aragon Ballroom at the Rancho Bernardo Inn.
Winter formal’s theme is “May the Force Be With You,” which originates from the popular movie series Star Wars. The Associated Student Body approved the theme due to the recent hype for the film, Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
ASB hopes the movie reference will increase student interest in the dance. Decorations and remixes of the Star Wars soundtracks will incorporate the theme into the event.
“The dance will have various Star Wars items, and the decorations will also show a focus on space,” ASB President Michael Munro ’16 said.
Winter formal used to be a date-only dance. However, this year ASB allows all students to go stag, meaning without a date. The dance is open to students of all grade levels, similar to the homecoming dance. However, the two events are unique with different dynamics.
”Formal is much different than Homecoming,” ASB Vice President Amanda Ashline ‘16, said. “It is a date-oriented dance, and usually has the highest turnout.”
Chaperones will enforce the dress code in the same manner they have in previous years. Girls whose outfits violate the dress code will not receive shorts to cover up with, but instead they will be required to change.
If a second outfit is not available, girls will be required to leave the dance. Thus, ASB and the administration recommend female students who plan to attend the dance follow dress code or to keep a spare dress in their cars.
Students unsure about the dress code, they can consult the specific guidelines provided on the CCHS homepage, on the CCHS Facebook page and in the email addressed to all students.
“Formal will be one to remember and special due to all the hard work that has gone into it,” Munro ’16said. “ASB has a fun theme to work with, and we are looking forward to great dance.”
Doors open at 7 p.m. and close between 8-10 p.m. The dance concludes at 11 p.m.
Tickets are still available for purchase in the ASB office. This week is the last chance to buy tickets.
“I’m interested to see how they incorporate the theme this year,” Ashley Shafer ’18 said. “I’m excited.”
