Next Friday, November 5, Cathedral’s annual Blood Drive will be held for students and staff member’s willing to participate. From 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM, San Diego Blood Bank accept donations at a Blood-mobile parked outside of Guadalupe Center.
This year’s blood drive will be held in honor of Derek Thomas, a recent graduate who survives a car crash in early August that took the lives of four other people. He remains in critical condition in a Los Angeles Hospital.
According to San Diego Blood Bank, their most reliable source of donors are in the aging population with younger people giving little to none at all. Bringing the donating process on school campuses is an attempt to spread awareness of the need for donations. Four hundred pints of blood are needed each day to meet the needs of San Diego County, a number that is difficult to reach with just 5% of the population actually donating.
Students who are interested in giving blood must sign up in the Activities office or at the booth in front of the library by Thursday November 4th. Students must be at least seventeen years old to participate and are required to get a permission slip signed by a parent or guardian.
